What is adware?
Adware is a
software
that executes itself while we are working in
out PCs and shows us a pop up window in
which some sort of advertisement is shown,
it might be some type of anti – spam or
anti – virus,
these windows that show publicity are known
as pop – ups, in some cases they force us to
go to an specific web site and they can even
install some navigator in our Internet
Explorer’s tool bar. |
|
|
The adware program is
also known as shareware, the words forming it are publicity
software, and this used to be used by programmers to earn some
extra money, but when it started to expand, the advertisements
turn bigger and more annoying and strop respecting the privacy
of the users, it became a harmful code.
These programs’ infection way might be through web pages with
malicious codes that download adware without our acknowledgement
and then, they force us to go to some web site in order to fix
the infection, also through some
Trojan
that makes us think it is not malicious and makes us go into a
web site in which we could download that particular software to
eliminate the infection; there are also many programs that when
are been installed are also downloading
adware, because in the installation process, in the part of
the legal license, the

explanation of what we are downloading is written
in small words, that is why we do not realize what we are
downloading until it is too late. Most of the times, these
applications install themselves in our tool bars as search
engines and are almost impossible to eliminate without a good
anti – adware program. |
|
 |
Many companies use adware to force us to check
out some web sites so we can see their publicity, others try to
make us download their software, because, according to their
publicity, is the only one that will be able of helping us
getting rid of the adware that is affecting us, it also intends
to force us into using the search engine they have installed
without requesting us to. Some adware even check our personal
information so then they can distribute it to other companies
that pay for personal information. |
|
To realize if your
PC is infected with some sort
of adware, you only need to check if you have some of the
following symptoms:
- If your computer is working slower than it usually does.
- If your homepage has been changed, and you have not modified
it.
- If your Internet Explorer’s tool bar has a new search engine
at the upper right side of it.
- If there are new antivirus or anti – spam icons in your
desktop and you have not installed them.
- If when you are surfing in some web site and suddenly a window
that you have not requested appears out of the blue. |
|
|
- If some of your Internet Explorer’s configurations have been
modified, for example, it does not longer shows images or java
applications.
- If in your favorite web sites, some that you have not added
are shown in your list.
If your PC has some of these symptoms, it is
probable that you are a victim of some sort of adware, and the
most recommended thing to do, will be to download an
anti – adware software, and also to be
careful with the web pages you enter at when you are surfing in
the Internet.
I would strongly recommend these programs to
eliminate any adware or
spyware:
- Super Antispyware is one of the most recommended ones,
and it is specialized in eliminating adware (http://www.superantispyware.com):
- Adware – free (http://ad-aware.softonic.com/),
the best of all is that it is free and it also works against
other viruses.
