What is streaming?
Streaming is a
technology used to make the execution of
multimedia content, obtained through the
Internet, lighter without the
need of
downloading it directly into our
hard drive. Before we had to
download the whole file in order to be
able of watching it, now we only have to
execute it, and it will be temporarily
stored in the buffer. |

In order to function
correctly, the
streaming needs some resources, such as
the codecs, which are files that reside in
the computer, they allow one or more
programs to decode or interpret the content
from certain multimedia file.
Videos that are reproduced in web sites but
with a higher quality are also known as
streaming. Another resource that streaming
uses are the light PROTOCOLS, UDP and RTSP
(PROTOCOLS employed by some “streaming”
technologies) they make data packages
deliveries from the server which is playing
the file at a much faster speed than the one
you might get from a TCP and HTTP. |

This efficiency is reached by
a discipline that makes the constant flow of
data packages much easier. When TCP and HTTP
suffer from a transmission failure, they
keep trying to transmit the lost data
packages until they get a confirmation
saying that the information arrived
completely. However, UDP keeps sending the
data, without taking into account the
interruptions, due to the fact that in a
multimedia application these loses are
almost imperceptible. |

The pre load works when it
delivers the data from a server which is
subject to delays known as lag, a phenomenon
which appears then there is very few data
(due to the interruptions in the connection
or an overload in the broadband). That is
why the multimedia players pre load or store
information in the buffer, which is some
sort of memory, data are received so it can
be used as a reserve, with the objective of
avoiding the play to stop. |

This is similar to what happens in a portable CD
player, it avoids the stops and the silences caused by cuts in
the lecture due to vibrations or movement, storing the data
before the user has access to it.
In the net of content distribution, when certain content starts
attracting a level of users which is higher than its broadband
capacity, these users will suffer from cuts or lag. Finally, you
reach to a point in which the stream
quality is very bad. Offering solutions, some companies and
organizations are in charge of providing a broadband exclusively
for streaming, and supporting and developing these services. |

streaming in a web site is pretty simple, it
is only necessary to store the multimedia
content we want to publish and follow
certain rules in order to be able of
publishing, depending on each system; most
of them use a specialized software, such as
the ones offered by the Real Player.
Summarizing, the
streaming technology is a market that a
good future, many companies are aware of
this and are fighting to see who will lead
the multimedia transmission through the
Internet, because the speeds are increasing
and it is possible to offer services such as
television and radio through this
technology.
