To photographers:
The ageless issue of "How do I get work as a
photographer if everyone wants me to have
some experience and credential first?" is
finally solved.
Expose some of your good photographic work
for others to use and leverage the good
exposure, visibility and credentials
generated by this to build your reputation
and price when bidding for work.
I am interested in listing other similar
resources that you know about.
Thanks to
Brain Kennemer and his
blog about online image resources
for inspiring me to research this subject in
detail.
Mayang's Free Textures
http://www.mayang.com/textures/
Mayang's Free Texures is a library of over
3000 textures from architecture, building,
fabric, man-made items, metal, nature,
plants, stone and wood. Images are high
quality resolution at 1600x1200 or larger
with most at 2560x1920.
All images are free for all uses except for
selling and they appreciate credit. The site
has a mailing list for those who wish to be
notified when new textures are added.
The download limit is 20 textures per day.
The site lets you know how many you've
downloaded. Each image comes with a caption
describing it. The aerial view of Paris and
other locales are amazing. Not all images
look like background pictures especially the
autos collection. So don't let the term
"texture" throw you off.
Free Large Photos
http://freelargephotos.com/
Free Large Photos contains a collection of
over 600 images and allows others to use the
photos as long as credit is given and it's
not used for making money. An RSS feed is
available for the collection and here are
the most requested photos.
Click any image to view its page and its
full sized version and its categories. Each
image comes with a short caption. The Paris
Opera Garnier photo is gorgeous.
Get images covering outdoors, nature,
travel, transportation and more. While it's
a small collection, it's well done.
Kingdom Graphix Gallery
http://www.kingdomgraphix.com/gallery/
The photo collection at Kingdom Graphix
Gallery is free provided you link back to
kingdomgraphix.com/gallery. You can even
"alter, chop, slice, make psp tubes or
brushes using these images" according to its
Terms. Here's an unusual, but nice term of
usage, "You MAY NOT use my images for ANY
projects that include animal cruelty, hate,
adult websites, religious defamation,
violence of any kind or race defamation."
To download photos, requires free
registration. Regular visitors can see
what's new by clicking New Images. Also view
the top images by rating, votes, hits and
downloads. You can't directly access the top
images from the list. Instead you'll need to
do a search or click the category and find
it there.
The site has over 900 images sorted into 20
categories. Other than regular photos, it
has textures and manipulated images. The Ice
Castle images are breathtaking. You won't
get more than thumbnail pages until you
register and the collection is worthy.

around the world with over 7,000 photos in

The terms of service isn't clear regarding
photo use. However, you can select the
images you like and add them to your
downloads list. Once you've collected all
the photos you like, download them as a
zipped file. You don't have to register to
take advantage of this feature.
You can send photos as an e-card and rate
them. Every photo's detail page contains its
file name, album name, size, dimension and
more. The site also has a search tool for
finding images by keywords. Some photos are
breathtaking and give you insight into the
beauty of our world.
MSN Search
http://search.msn.com/images/results.aspx
MSN.com is a large network that provides or
links to news, resources, directories,
guides, online applications and searches.
Its search box appears through most of its
network and when you enter a keyword, Images
appears in the results page. You can also
get to Images by going to the MSN.com home
page.
When you get your first search results, the
Settings option is available. Click it to
change the display, results, SafeSearch,
location and language options. The search
results lets you know how many results it
has found and whether you want it to display
All, Large, Medium, Small, Color or B&W
(black and white). All overrides everything
including Color and B&W. If you have B&W
selected and click All, then color images
appear.
If you're not happy with the results or find
a problem, click Help us improve that
appears on the bottom of the results page.
Here you can provide feedback from general
comment and getting inappropriate images to
copyrighted image and a problem. Click the
image to get its details as well as the page
it's on. MSN makes it clear that "MSN Search
is not affiliated with the contents or
authors of the page displayed below. We are
not responsible for its content. The image
may be subject to copyright laws." So check
the image's page to find out if it's
copyrighted or not. If it's yours, you can
report the image.
