What
is Emule?
Emule is a program that is useful to
exchange files through a
P2P net, it uses two special protocols known as eDonkey 2000 and
Kad, the last one was created specifically for this program but
it has exchangeable nodes between protocols. |
|
|
This program, exclusively made for
Windows, was
made as an option to eDonkey, which is another
P2P program, but
as time passed, most of the users that use the eDonkey migrated
towards Emule, because besides it had much more tools and an
easier interface, and you did not need to pay for it; other
Emule versions were also created for different operative systems,
by they work in an emulated way, such as: IMule, XMule and aMule.
Emule’s planning as a project was started on May the 13 in 2002
by Hendrik Breitkreuz, who insisted in changing the eDonkey 2000
protocol to improve it, he created Emule as a contraction of
Electronic mule, which was based in eDonkey for its creation. |
|
|
Later, seven other developers joined the Emule
project, a little after, the source code was published in the
sourcefoge web site, on July the 6th of that same year and it
was launched on August the 4th with its 0.05a version. |
|
 |
From that year until now, Emule has been
downloaded more than 400 million times and is sustained by a
sixteen people staff: two developers, two project coordinators,
three testers and nine purifiers. The official web site in which
the new applications and updates are published is sustained by
seven developers and for moderators or managers. |
|
Among its most remarkable characteristics, we
find that it was direct exchange with all its customers, it can
recover incomplete or damaged parts during the transference, it
has at its disposal a private net of servers known as Kademlia,
which is improving and updating itself every day, such as the
webcache option, as an extra help to download files. |
|
|
It counts with a GLP license, in which any user
is able of uploading or sharing files; it also works it a
credits system, in which sharing more files will put you in a
preferential position when downloading files, because it works
as a waiting line. It also has a Chat IRC system, in which you
can share your comments and files, it has its own compression
system known as Zlib, it is used so there is not an unnecessary
usage of the broadband wide, it can recognize files for their
content and not necessarily for their name, this is a very
useful option when you are looking for information. You can even
see some sneak peeks of the files before they have been
completely downloaded, this option uses the VLC media player;
these are a few of the Emule characteristics, because in
comparison with other P2P nets, the advantage it has is that is
has more than 8 million users, which makes it excellent to find
any kind of content.
But regarding security matters, it is better to have the
firewall option activated, because there are always some files
that have malicious codes; it is also important to have our
anti
– virus software updated as a preventive measure. For all of
those who are interested in
downloading this excellent program,
they can do it from its official web page:
