Its origin was given by a little alliance between
Symbol Technologies and Nokia, called WECA, a little time later
its name was changed for Wi-Fi Alliance, whose objective was
fomenting a new radio technology, which means, a wireless mode
of finding protection in the equipments that participate.
Then, in the year 2000, WEA begin certifying equipments with
this technology with the IEEE 802.11b standards, with the
purpose of been able to substitute those physical layers of Mac
equipments, whose transmission was through the Ethernet, due to
the fact that there are almost no noticeable differences
with Wi
– Fi, even though there are different contents in the packages
that are sent.

The Wi – Fi support previews communication
between those certified devices, WECA counts with several
equipments in various categories produced since the year 2000;
this implies that, now, there is a great level of distribution
for the public. |

In order to be able to use
Wi – Fi, it is
necessary to have certain devices to support this technology,
such as routers, receptive cards, access points, USB or PCI
cards.Access points are in charge of continuing the internet
signal which is received through UTP wires, or simply to amplify
certain weak signal that is transmitted through a router.
Depending on the device used, the access points are in a
distance of 100 meters from each other, tops. |

Routers are devices that receive a signal from a
telephone company of from the Internet; usually, these companies
offer these devices to their clients through the acquisition of
their service. The router is able of solving its own signal
reception problems, errors or the lack of information extraction
from the net and it has a high level of efficiency when
diffusing the signals to several
computers.
Besides from routers, there are also a wide range of equipments
that work in a similar way to gather and distribute the signal,
such as Hubs, which are able of carrying the net wire flux and,
in that way, they widen it; switches are interconnection
analogical devices which build bridges between equipments to be
able to carry information in the base of the Mac addresses.

Regarding the equipments of signal reception, we
find that there are divided into three types, such as the USB,
PCI and PCMC cards, which are connected through a USB port.
Resulting, in that way, in a simple way of connection and usage,
these devices also provide certain types of phone call
connections based in PreN technology.
One of the disadvantages of Wi – Fi technology, is its low flux
and data packages speed, regarding the conventional wires,
because of various interferences or signal cuts in which the
environment is used as a medium, which can be caused by the
weather. Another low hit is its low level of virtual protection,
caused by the fact that thre are several programs that are
dedicated to stealing data packages, because several people
could be able of surfing the net without having to pay for the
service, despite it having a net access password, because it is
very simple to get
passwords in the WPA or WPA2 standards.
