VoIP
VoIP (voice over
Internet protocol) is a new revolutionary technology that
can change telephony as we know it; it basically works by
sending the users voice in digital packages through circuits
that are only usable for telephony, like a conventional phone
company or PSTN, the protocols used by VoIP to send its signals
are commonly referred as voice over IP or IP protocols. |
|
|
VoIP allows any regular
Internet
link to be converted and used as a media to make free phone
calls to any part of the world, this signal is sent through the
Internet into one persons computer into anothers, where the
inverse process occurs so the voice of the first one can be
heard again. In this way we reach to the result in which the end
is a phone call completely free of charge.
Implications for the phone industry are huge, because this
technology threatens with disappearing the traditional phone
companies, in which companies charged high prices per minute in
long distance calls. In the United States there are already
companies such as Vonage, which offers packages of unlimited
phone use for a low monthly installment. Finally, traditional
telephony companies such as
aT&T
and Verizon
are preparing themselves to avoid these new technologies taking
them by surprise. |
|
Here we will see what types of VoIP exist, how
their technologies differ from one another and how we can take
advantage from this technology to enjoy free phone calls. Types
of VoIP aTa this is the easiest way of using the VoIP, which
is simply an adapter with two connectors, one plugged into a
regular phone and the other one plugged into the Internet access
line. Its abbreviation stands for analogue Telephone adapter. |
|
 |
It is basically in charge of transforming the
analogue voice of a regular phone into digital packages that can
be sent through the Internet, and vice versa. Usually, it does
not require a computer, because it is a self-sufficient system. |
If you are interested in trying to make phone
calls through the VoIP system, you need to check the software
available in the Internet. The most common ones and simpler to
user are: Skype (http://www.skype.com) and Google Talk (http://www.google.com/talk/),
although recently MSN Messenger and Yahoo have also included
this basic functionality.
another advantage that is has over regular telephony is its
quality level, because through this type of signal, the property
of silence suppression is offered, which grants more efficiency
when having a voice transmission, because it uses better the
broadband when transmitting less information.
It also makes a priority transmission packages that have a lower
time of delay.
Summarizing, this new technology has a great potential ahead and
it could be the solution to the problem that most people have
with the monthly installments that come for using the phone,
this technology will be the next revolution in the
digital communications era.
