How to partition hard drive a hard drive?
When we first acquire a
hard drive we see ourselves with more
than a problem, first, that the drive is not installed in the
CPU and also that our operative system works with logical units
that are the volumes in which the data is stored; inside the
same hard drive several logical units can be created, and each
one of them is known as shares, meaning that in any hard drive,
depending on its capacity, can be divided into several shares. |
|
|
both structures allow organizing data inside a
hard drive. However, they have important differences between
each other: in the first place, shares are divisions that have a
fixed size inside the hard drive; directories are divisions of
variable sizes of the share; shares occupy a group of adjoining
cylinders of the hard drive (greater security); directories
usually have their information spread in all the share (this is
why the periodical fragmentation of the hard drive is
necessary).
Each share of the hard drive can have its own file system (FaT,
FaT32, NTFS, etc); all the directories of a share have the same
system of files. As a minimum, it is necessary to create one
share for each hard drive. This share might hold the whole space
capacity of the hard drive, or just a part of it.

Hard drive partitioning strategies
When you start with a new empty hard drive,
creating shares turns out to be an easy job. Windows NT, 2000
and XP installing programs offer certain control in the creation
of the shares. Other versions of Windows have the FDISK pre
installed; it is a basic utility of shares that can be copied
into a floppy disk. but if you require extensive options of
shares, you will need a program such as
Partition Commander or
PartitionMagic. |
|
 |
These programs offer options such as changing the
size of the shares and perform conversions
of different file systems. This can be done
preserving the stored information, if you
have enough space in the hard drive. |
First, go into the Start menu, then select the
Programs option, go inside the accessories menu, enter to the
System Tools option and there select the option of
fragmenting
de drive. To use the security backup included in Windows 9x or
ME, select Start, Programs, accessories, System Tools, Security
Copy, following the program instructions. If the security copy
is not installed, in Windows 9x can be installed in the Start
menu, Settings, Control Panel, add/Remove programs, Windows
installations, accessories and select the utility wanted. In
Windows ME you have to execute the program which installs it:
Msbexp.exe, which can be located in the addons/MSbackup menu in
the Windows ME installations CD. In Windows XP Professional,
select the Start menu, Control Panel, Function and Maintenance,
Security Copy.
before running the
shares program, you must decide on how you
are going to organize your hard drive. Considering the size of
the hard drive, determine if you only want to segregate the data
of the operative system and the applications, or if you want to
create a more complex structure, and if you are going to install
different operative systems. You must follow the suggestions
that are explained in the shares utility manual. Generally they
include intelligent software (wizards) that guide the user
during the whole process.
at the end you will only have to restart the system, and it will
be automatically reorganized, as you can see it is a simple and
intuitive process that anyone can perform.
